Tourism in India

By multiplenews - November 18th, 2010, 1:32, Category: General

India as a tourist spot is unlike any other tourist destination in the world. Tourists looking for a calm, clean, organized holiday may be disappointed. There are better places to go for that sort of thing. For those willing to be surprised at every turn, this is the place to visit.

India Tourism can be enjoyed at various levels.

1. Nature: Nature has lavished her beauty on India. You can arrange to see snow-clad mountains and mountain lakes. Organized treks are are available in the Himalayas in the north and in the Nilgiris in the south and in other parts of India too.

2. Beaches: Goa beach tour or Trivandrum is your best destination. If you decide on Trivandrum, then, Kanyakumari or Cape Comeran as it was earlier known as is close by. That is the lowest tip of the Indian peninsula where the three seas meet. Chennai has the world's second largest beach.

3. Palaces and monuments: The Taj Mahal is the most famous. My suggestion is that you should base your stay in Delhi and take some of the scheduled tours from there. That way you will get to see Agra and the Taj, Beautiful palaces in Jaipur and other parts of Rajasthan, a local tour of Delhi itself.

However, there are important monuments in most parts of India. But it would not be wise to go all the way to a city just to see one monument. For instance, if you are in Calcutta, do not miss the Vicoria Memorial. So also Vidhana Soudha in Bangalore, Gateway of India in Mumbai, Charminar in Hyderabad.

For palaces, another place to go is Mysore.

4. Temples: Konarak and Dilwara in the north and Madurai, Mysore, and Tanjore in the south.

5. Wild life: Bird sanctuaries and wild life reserves are found in several places in India. Jim Corbett National Park is famous for Tigers and the closest town of access is Ramnagar.

6. Adventure: All of India is adventurous if you are prepared to step out and taste real Indian life (go slow on the food). Take a city bus, the regular one that people take. Why, an auto ride across the city in the morning rush-hour traffic would beat the best roller coaster ride. And it is pretty safe too. I have been out in the traffic for 39 years now and have never been in an accident.

As an Indian, my advice to tourist is that the essence of India is in its people. You will feel the difference as soon as you step into India. It can blow your mind. You will find that people are generally very poor. But you will also see that somehow they survive and seem to be happy. Once you overcome the initial culture shock, you have gained a new perspective of life from that experience.
